Parliament, Monday, 1 July 2024 – National Assembly (NA) Speaker, Ms Thoko Didiza and National Council of Provinces (NCOP) Chairperson, Ms Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane, will tomorrow address the first day of the week-long induction programme for Members of Parliament. The induction programme will be at the Century City Conference Centre from Tuesday to Friday.

Recently sworn-in Members of Parliament will attend the induction programme. Secretary to Parliament, Mr Xolile George, Secretaries to the Houses, Mr Masibulele Xaso and Adv Modibedi Phindela, and Registrar of Members Interests, Adv Anthea Gordon, will present on key topics relating to the work of MPs and the core mandate of Parliament.

Independent expert speakers, including, among others, the Chairperson of the Moral Regeneration Movement, Father Simangaliso Mkhatshwa and the Statistician-General, Mr Risenga Maluleke will also be part of the programme.

MPs will also receive presentations from civil society stakeholders and Chapter 9 institutions, including the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa), the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution (Casac), the Auditor-General of South Africa, the Public Service Commission, and the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities.

Among the topics that will be covered is an introduction to the core business of Parliament, the roles and responsibilities of Members and Office Bearers, ethical standards for members, engaging with civil society, gender-responsive planning, budgeting, monitoring and evaluation, as well as an introduction to parliamentary rules, structures and support.

TIME: 9:30 (registration to start at 8:30). The Induction will conclude at noon tomorrow

Meanwhile, the NA will tomorrow at 14:00 convene a plenary sitting to, among others, elect House Chairpersons, members that will represent the NA at the Pan-African Parliament, Southern African Development Community Parliamentary Forum, and the Judicial Services Commission. The NA is also expected to revive the Appropriation Bill during the same sitting.

The NCOP will tomorrow also, at 14:00, convene a plenary sitting at Parliament in the NCOP Chamber. Among the items on the agenda are the election of the Permanent Deputy Chairperson of the NCOP, Programming Whip, House Chairpersons, and the election of members to represent the NCOP at the Pan African Parliament, the Southern African Development Community Parliamentary Forum, the Judicial Services Commission, Members of the Magistrate Commission, Members that will serve as trustees of the Political Office-Bearers Pension Fund, and PARMED Medical Aid Scheme Trustee Members.
