Parliament, Sunday, 21 August 2022 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Health, Dr Kenneth Jacobs, has learnt with shock about the attack of the Chairperson of the South African Medical Association (SAMA), Dr Mvuyisi Mzukwa, on the side of the road while he was driving home from King Shaka International Airport yesterday.

According to media reports Dr Mzukwa was on his way back from a SAMA Board meeting. He sustained multiple stab wounds in the chest. He was discovered by the Metro Police and rushed to a nearby hospital where he was stabilised and is now recovering in the intensive care unit.

Dr Jacobs said the committee wishes Dr Mzukwa a speedy recovery. The committee is with Dr Mzukwa’s family during this difficult time as they wish their relative a speedy recovery and healing. “The committee condemns this act of criminality and barbarism in the strongest terms. We are also calling on motorists to be extra vigilant on the road as criminals are becoming more ruthless everyday,” said Dr Jacobs.

Furthermore, the committee is calling on the South African Police Service and other relevant law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned until the perpetrator or perpetrators of this heinous brutality is or are apprehended and prosecuted. “Whoever has committed this act deserves to rot in jail. We are trusting that the police are going to find the perpetrator or a gang of perpetrators,” added Dr Jacobs.
