Parliament, Wednesday, 23 November 2022 – The Chairperson of Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises, Mr Khaya Magaxa, has condemned in the strongest terms an illegal oversight visit today to Kusile Power station in Mpumalanga, which was led by the leader of the Democratic Alliance, Mr John Steenhuisen.

Mr Steenhuisen was denied access to the power station by the Minister of Public Enterprises, Mr Pravin Gordan. Mr Steenhuisen described the protocols to be adhered to as “bureaucratic hoops”.

Mr Magaxa said it is regrettable that Mr Steenhuisen, as the leader of the official opposition party in the National Assembly and the second biggest party in the country, showed gross opportunism, failed to recognise and respect a national key point. Mr Magaxa said Eskom power stations are national key points and anyone wanting to access them should follow proper protocols.

“Leaders of political parties should not use national key points as political playing grounds. National key points must be respected,” said Mr Magaxa.
