Parliament, Thursday, 10 November 2022 – The Portfolio Committee on Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities notes with contempt the use of social media platforms as sites of revenge in light of what has been circulated pertaining to the Speaker of the legislature in the Free State, Ms Zanele Sifuba.

The incident is yet another display of gender-based violence perpetrated by a male against a female. The committee notes that extortion involving sexual revenge has become a disturbing trend and must be curtailed. The perpetrator must face the full wrath of the law.

The Films and Publications Amendment Act (11 of 2019), explicitly prohibits the distribution of private sexual photographs or film without the consent of individuals appearing therein. Women’s rights to privacy and dignity must be protected and upheld.

The Chairperson of the committee, Ms Nonhlanhla Ncube-Ndaba said: “What remains a key concern for the committee is the lack of respect for women’s choices and consent, resulting in the violation of their rights. More needs to be done in this regard to ensure women’s rights are upheld.”
